Located in the scenic Clay County, FL, Fleming Island is an unincorporated community approximately 21 miles southwest of downtown Jacksonville, situated on the western banks of the St. Johns River. With a population of nearly 30,000, it is part of the Jacksonville, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The community is named after George Fleming, an Irish immigrant who received a 1,000-acre land grant from the Spanish governor of East Florida for his distinguished military service. In 1790, he established Hibernia Plantation, named after the Latin term for Ireland, in what is now Hibernia, FL. The area remained largely undeveloped until 1942, when the U.S. Navy constructed four asphalt runways on the site.
